Martian Proton Aurora Brightening Reveals Atmospheric Ion Loss Intensifying

چکیده
The Martian proton aurora is a distinct phenomenon resulting from the direct deposition of solar wind energy into Mars' dayside atmosphere. What parameters influence activity in short term yet unknown, as are associated repercussions atmospheric ion loss. Here we present observational evidence synchronized brightening and loss intensifying on Mars, controlled by dynamic pressure, using observations Mars Atmosphere Volatile Evolution spacecraft. pressure possibly has saturation effect aurora. Significant erosion ionosphere during periods high indicates at least five-to-tenfold increase An empirical relationship between escape rate auroral emission enhancement established, providing new proxy with optical imaging that may be used remotely greater flexibility.

The Martian Atmospheric Boundary Layer
[1] The planetary boundary layer (PBL) represents the part of the atmosphere that is strongly influenced by the presence of the underlying surface and mediates the key interactions between the atmosphere and the surface. On Mars, this represents the lowest 10 km of the atmosphere during the daytime. This portion of the atmosphere is extremely important, both scientifically and operationally, be...

Hydrogen emissions are the signature of proton aurora. The Doppler-shifted hydrogen emission lines can be interpreted in terms of the mean energy of the precipitating protons. A red shifted component of the line profiles observed from the ground indicates upward going hydrogen atoms due to angular redistribution of the precipitation. Secondary electrons from ionization and stripping collisions ...

Introduction: Martian space probe, Viking landers could not measure Ne isotopic ratios, but only had the concentration of Ne as 2.5 ppm (error +3.5, -1.5) in Martian atmosphere [1]. After that, there have been many efforts to determine Ne isotopic composition of Martian atmosphere, by examining the Martian atmospheric gases trapped in impact glasses of the EET 79001 and other shergottites [2-6]...

φn = P'(Krn)/σ79, (3) where P'(Krn) = 2.33 Â P(Krn) and has the dimension neutrons cms. The resonance integral σ79 is 110 Â cm [3]. Fig. 1 demonstrates the resulting neutron fluxes. They are shown in relation to the fluxes of > 5 MeV neutrons that were calculated based on cosmogenic Ne [8]. Two scenarios are possible how the meteoritic material might have experienced the observed neutron fluxes...
